M7: Google Earth

Exploring Southern Florida with Google Earth

Introduction and Overview

Our latest cartography lab allowed us to explore the features of Google Earth Pro. We transformed GIS data into a comprehensive, interactive map of Southern Florida. The objective? To enhance our understanding of geographical visualization and storytelling through advanced tools.

Our Map

We created a KMZ file showcasing Southern Florida's population density. The map uses dots to indicate population sizes, layered over a detailed backdrop that includes water bodies and county boundaries. Each county is equipped with interactive pop-up details. The entire map is anchored by a visible legend that helps decode the visual data.

The Process

The journey to our final map involved several key steps. Initially, our ArcGIS maps were converted into KML files using ArcGIS Pro. This ensured accurate data representation when imported into Google Earth. Adding an image overlay for the legend and meticulously organizing the layers helped maintain clarity and functionality. The result was a well-structured and informative KMZ file.

Recap

The creation of this lab's deliverables required a mix of technical skills and creativity. We converted GIS layers to KML, organized them in Google Earth, and ensured the final presentation was both educational and engaging. The result? A dynamic map that not only educates but also captivates the user, bringing geographic data to life with interactive elements.
